Dr. Oetker

Dr. Oetker - It all started with baking powder

Every child in Germany knows Dr. Oetker baking mixes. But muesli, cocoa, pudding and baking accessories such as vanilla sugar are also known and valued. In 1891, August Oetker took over a pharmacy in Bielefeld. The son of a baker there experimented with producing a more durable baking powder, which became a guide. The Oetker Group is now a globally active family group and consists of around 350 companies.

Dr. August Oetker - much more than muesli and baking from Bielefeld

The invention of a better-lasting baking powder founded the family business Dr. Oetker from Westphalia. In 1901, August Oetker registered his patent and sold it in small bags under the Backin brand. Success didn't take long, and the low manufacturing costs brought Oetker big profits. A factory was built in Bielefeld, which is still the company's headquarters today. Oetker did not invent baking powder - but he improved the recipe. However, the decisive factor for his enormous success was that he developed various new advertising strategies. On the one hand, he specifically used his doctorate to suggest health and quality, and on the other hand, he thought about the needs of his target group: The baking powder was dosed in such a way that it was the right amount for each pound of flour. And baking recipes were printed on each bag. The Backin bags were then saved and collected in recipe books. August Oetker also published baking and cooking books, such as a school cookbook, all of which became bestsellers. Just a few of many ideas he used to make his company big. August Oetker invented sustainable content marketing, so to speak!
